The big brands on the market are doing a great job at raising greater awareness for the non-alcoholic category and getting more people trying alcohol-free spirits, however, the smaller Artisan brands really are the ones to watch.
They don’t yet have the worlds spotlight on them yet and can therefore take more risks.

Taking risks mean different and more exciting results. Not just an alcohol-free gin, but a spirit that is complex and different and doesn’t fit into an existing category. That is what we are all looking for.
Many artisan brands also use a small batch process where each product is made on a small scale and therefore quality is of the highest level. Plus, it’s nice to think your bottle has been specifically made for you.
A brand doing just this is JOMO’s February non-alc spirit Mahala Botanical.
Master Distiller and Founder, Danielle grew up on her family farm in the beautiful South Africa and would forage ingredients. From her love of foraging and her country, she built a distillery in South Africa in 2020 to create the wonderful Mahala Botanical. She even named Mahala after the Zulu slang word for ‘free’ to represent what they are all about - free from sugar, colourants, artificial flavours and of course, alcohol. Owning the entire process from foraging botanicals to distilling in Mahala’s custom built vacuum stills.
Mahala use ingredients native to South Africa to bring the spirit, landscape and heritage to each bottle and every sip.
Nine hand-sourced botanicals are infused under a vacuum to extract the intricate, delicate and complex flavours. Cardamom, cloves, buchu, orange peel, cassia bark, honey bush, Angelica root, peppercorn and pelargonium citronella. We are left with a delicately spiced non-alcoholic spirit with a zesty citrus finish.
Both spirits in Mahala’s range have gone on to win multiple awards and stand strong as a key contender in the alcohol-free spirit space - made with love every step of the way. We believe when something is made with love, it tastes that much better.
Signature Serve - M & T
A serve we all know and love. 50ml Mahala Botanical over ice in your favourite gin glass topped with a premium, light tonic. Garnish with lemon zest and a sprig of rosemary.
The Bees Knees
50ml Mahala Botanical over ice, mixed with a spoon of honey, a squeeze of orange and topped with tonic water. Garnish with a slice of orange.
Elderflower Tea Spritz
50ml Mahala Botanical, 25ml Elderflower syrup, a squeeze lemon, 75ml strong lemon tea. Mix well and add ice.
